Humantay Lake, the Salkantay pass, the hot springs of Santa Teresa and Llactapata

The Salkantay Trek in 5 days: from the foot of the glaciers to the jungle, with Humantay Lake, the Salkantay pass (4,630 m), the hot springs of Santa Teresa, the Inca site of Llactapata facing Machu Picchu and a guided sunrise tour of the citadel.

The Salkantay Trek in 5 days is an unforgettable adventure along a magical trail that starts at the foot of an imposing snow-capped mountain and ends at one of the Wonders of the World, with breathtaking views all the way.

From the very first day you live a spectacular change of microclimates, full of flora and fauna. It is an ancient, remote route in the same region as the Inca Trail, with snowy peaks and lush tropical forest, northwest of Cusco in the Vilcabamba range.

Salkantay (6,271 m) is a mountain covered by glaciers and revered for thousands of years by local people; in Quechua its name means "wild mountain". Our team of guides, cooks and horsemen, with top camping equipment, will make this trek an unforgettable memory.

The trek at a glance

Difficulty: moderate to high — you need good physical condition and to be used to walking for long periods. Highest point: the Salkantay pass. Accommodation: a glass igloo, an Andean hut and a sky capsule on the trek, and a hotel in Aguas Calientes. Meals: buffet style, with vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and pescatarian options.

Return by train or by bus

The price includes the train back from Aguas Calientes. If you are on a tighter budget, you can do the same trek for less and return to Cusco by bus from Hidroeléctrica instead of the train.

Acclimatisation

Even if you are fit, spend at least two days in Cusco before the trek so your body can adapt to the altitude. This is very important.

  • Visit the magical Humantay Lake
  • Push your limits and reach the top of the Salkantay pass
  • Relax in the beautiful hot springs of Santa Teresa
  • Explore the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu and its surroundings
  • Enjoy the train journey in its different classes
  • Take the best photos from the Guardian’s House
  • Fall in love with Inca culture and its living history
  • Taste — and help prepare — the food on the trek

It is highly recommended for a safe, hassle-free trek. Machu Picchu has rules that are easy to overlook when you travel on your own; with us you have the guidance and safety measures for an unforgettable experience.

It is moderate to high difficulty. You should be in good physical condition and used to walking for long periods.

The highest point of the trek is at 4,650 m. Even if you are fit, spend at least two days in Cusco beforehand to acclimatise properly — this is very important.

It changes a lot with altitude. On day 1 and on the morning of day 2, when you cross the Salkantay pass, it can be around 17 °C, dropping to 0 °C and even -5 °C in winter. From the afternoon of day 2, as you descend to Chaullay, and above all from day 3 in the jungle, it gets much warmer, so bring clothes for a wide range of conditions.

The dry season (April to October) brings sunny days with little rain and is the favourite of many travellers. In the rainy season (November to March) it rains more often, but the landscape is greener and there are fewer people.

We plan a gradual ascent, starting in the lower Sacred Valley. Our guides carry oxygen, monitor how you feel and adjust the pace whenever needed.
